Choosing a remote-control tool: the honest comparison
· 9min read
Every product page looks the same: encryption, simplicity, security. Here are the criteria that matter in the field, and how to verify them without trusting the promises. Start with money, end with proof.
Pricing: per technician or per device
This criterion costs you the fastest. The Ubidesk Pro plan charges 24 euros per technician per month, billed annually, with no limit on unattended devices. The Solo plan costs 12 euros per month for 50 devices, and the free Personal plan covers 3. Ask every vendor what happens when your fleet doubles: the answer changes the bill. Per-technician pricing scales with your team, not with your clients’ hardware.
Security, in detail
Words are not enough. You need the mechanisms.
- End-to-end encryption: TLS 1.3, AES-256-GCM, ECDH, with per-session keys.
- Mandatory multi-factor authentication, via TOTP, passkeys or FIDO2.
- Explicit user confirmation before any file transfer, no exceptions.
These points live in the technical documentation, not on the homepage. If a vendor does not document them, ask in writing. These three lines are the minimum, not the ceiling.
Trust, not just security
Technical security does not cover human risk. The Ubidesk Trust Layer adds the missing layer: KYB verification of businesses, a verified technician badge before acceptance, a warning before any unsolicited session, automatic blur of banking sites and password fields, alerts on suspicious behaviour and one-click reporting. Few tools address this risk, and your clients notice. It also gives your clients a reason to say yes to a session.
Compliance, with proof
A remote-control tool handles screens, files and credentials. Check data residency, European Union, Canada or United States with Ubidesk, and GDPR and Québec Law 25 coverage. On certifications, Ubidesk plays it straight: ISO 27001, SOC 2 and HIPAA are in progress. A vendor that displays them must be able to show them; a vendor that is preparing them must be able to say so. That is Ubidesk’s position: nothing displayed that is not documented. Residency choices exist for a reason: your clients’ regulators care.
The session experience
Daily work happens here: 4K display at 60fps, connections limited to port 443, 6-digit codes, a temporary client with no installation and no administrator rights, an agent that reconnects after a reboot, including in Safe Mode, and Wake-on-LAN for powered-off machines. Ubidesk remote support assembles those pieces, with an AI copilot to speed up repetitive sessions. The Ubidesk AI copilot suggests the next action during the session, which shortens routine fixes. All of it matters on the first support call of a bad Monday.
A free trial is not enough
A trial on one machine proves nothing. Test the tool on a real fleet, behind a real firewall, with a real reboot into Safe Mode. Limits show up at scale, never in a demo. Put your questions in writing: written answers commit.
Questions to ask any vendor
- Is pricing per technician or per device, and what happens when the fleet doubles?
- Do file transfers require user confirmation, no exceptions?
- Where does data reside, and who are the subprocessors?
- Are the advertised certifications obtained or in progress?
- Does the contract cancel monthly, with no commitment?
- Can technicians see banking sites and password fields during a session, or are they blurred?
With Ubidesk, the answer to the last question is yes, and early customers had their price locked for 24 months. Banking screens blur by default, no setting required. For freelancers, the comparison often comes down to those two lines. The rest proves itself in a week of testing on real machines. The grid above fits on one sheet; take it to every demo.
